2nd Officer, workfield Artic Circle

General responsibilities:

 

  • To assist the chief officer and the master, acting as navigation and executing bridge watches and, if applicable, as radio officer.
  • To familiarize your self with navigation instruments, regulations and work procedures pertaining to tasks assigned to him and/or to be executed under his responsibility.
  • Specific responsibilities in case there is no designated SAFETY OFFICER:

The 2nd officer is as navigation, safety and accident officer, responsible for the following functions:

  • Maintenance of lifeboat, rescue-boat, fire fighting and lifesaving equipment and responsible for keeping safety equipment log for this equipment up to date as required by SOLAS.
  • Perform a monthly safety observation round together with the 3rd Engineer and report finding in the Safety Committee Meeting
  • Act as Chairman in the monthly Safety Committee Meeting and record minutes in BASSnet
  • Keep in control of and immediately report potential accidents, safety and environmental hazards direct to the master.
  • In preparation to departure/arrival, carry out function tests and controls in accordance with the Bridge Arrival and Bridge Departure check lists, reporting state of readiness to master
  • Updating of charts and all relevant sailing-instructions including ECDIS. Corrections shall be entered in the chart logbook.
  • Act as radio operator; if applicable.
  • Maintenance and control of all navigation equipment including flags and signals.
  • Maintenance of ship’s maritime library consisting of regulations and guidelines.
  • -Preparation of route/passage planning berth to berth, subject to the master's approval, establishing:
  • The optimal safe route, distance, currents and weather conditions considered.
  • Distances, estimated speed and sailing time.
  • Preparation and checking of all charts and sailing information for the voyage intended.
  • Check daily time signal and log it.

Requirements:

  • Certificate of Compentence: “Officer of a navigational watch/ no limitations”
  • Seamensbook if Flagstate requires
  • Higher vocational Nautical school
  • All courses needed for position and experience on similar vessel
  • STCW Certificates
  • Fluently English spoken and written
